Mupirocin ointment is a topical antibiotic medication used to treat bacterial skin infections such as impetigo, folliculitis, and furunculosis. It is active against a wide range of gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and certain gram-negative bacteria. Mupirocin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly and specifically binding to bacterial isoleucyl transfer-RNA synthetase, and it is bactericidal at concentrations achieved by topical administration.
Mupirocin ointment is contraindicated in individuals with a history of sensitivity reactions to any of its components. If a reaction suggesting sensitivity or chemical irritation occurs with the use of mupirocin ointment, treatment should be discontinued, and appropriate alternative therapy for the infection should be instituted. Prolonged use of mupirocin ointment may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi. Mupirocin ointment is not formulated for use on mucosal surfaces, and intranasal use has a separate formulation.
The active ingredient in mupirocin ointment is mupirocin, and the inactive ingredients include polyethylene glycol ointment, N.F., benzyl alcohol, glycerol monostearate, mineral oil, phenoxyethanol, polyoxyl 20 cetostearyl ether, purified water, and xanthan gum.
