To find your elevation on Google Maps, you can use the "Terrain" function. By default, Google Maps only shows elevation in mountainous areas, so it doesnt report elevation everywhere. Here are the steps to find your elevation on Google Maps:

On a computer:

  1. Go to https://www.google.com/maps in your web browser.
  2. Type your location into the search bar in the top left corner of the page.
  3. Click on the "Layers" button in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  4. Click on "Terrain" to show topography and elevation.
  5. Make sure that "View topography" and "Elevation" are turned on in the Terrain slider at the bottom of the map.
  6. Zoom into the area on the map where you want to see the elevation. The numbers will appear as you get closer, but be careful not to zoom in too far as the contour and elevation lines may disappear.

On a mobile device:

  1. Open the Google Maps app or type https://www.google.com/maps into a mobile browser.
  2. Type your location into the search bar.
  3. In the app, tap the "Layers" icon in the top right and select "Terrain" under Map type. In the mobile browser, click the hamburger menu – the three horizontal lines – in the top left corner, and select "Terrain."
  4. In the app, close out of the menu by hitting the gray X button the top right corner. In the mobile browser, click the X in the top left corner.
  5. Zoom into the area on the map where you want to see the elevation. The numbers will appear as you get closer, but be careful not to zoom in too far as the contour and elevation lines may disappear.

Note that Google Maps does not report elevation for all areas, only naturally mountainous land will have an elevation option.
