If you are Indian, your ethnicity is Indian. Ethnicity refers to your background heritage, culture, religion, ancestry, or sometimes the country where you were born. It is important to note that ethnicity and race are not the same thing. Race is a persons self-identification with one or more social groups, which can include White, Black or African American, Asian, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and/or Other Pacific Islander. The U.S. Census Bureau and most state government data collection agencies include India and the entire Indian subcontinent (including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, etc.) in the Asian racial category. Therefore, Indians are considered Asians in the United States.
