Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) is a type of bacteria that can cause a sexually transmitted infection (STI) . It can infect the cervix, inside the penis, or the rectum. MG can be transmitted through vaginal or anal sex without a condom with someone who has the infection. Even if you don’t have vaginal sex, you can still get MG through other sexual activities. Symptoms of MG can include urethritis, which is a problem that makes your urethra irritated, swollen, and itchy, and can happen to both men and women. In women, MG can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can make it hard to get pregnant, and an inflamed cervix, called cervicitis. MG infections among women are frequently asymptomatic, and the consequences associated with asymptomatic MG infection are unknown. In men, MG infection causes urethritis, which is an infection of the urethra, and symptoms may include watery discharge from the penis and a burning sensation in the penis when urinating. Without adequate treatment, infection of the cervix may spread to the Fallopian tubes and cause PID, which may lead to scarring of the Fallopian tubes and ectopic or tubal pregnancy or eventual infertility.
