Narcissistic behavior is characterized by an inflated sense of self-importance, lack of empathy, and a great need for admiration, attention, or approval from others. While everyone may show occasional narcissistic behavior, true narcissists frequently ignore the needs of those around them. Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a mental health condition that causes problems in many areas of life, such as relationships, work, school, or financial matters. People with NPD may lack the ability to understand or care about the feelings of others, and they view the people in their lives as objects there to serve their needs. Symptoms of NPD include an unreasonably high sense of self-importance, a need for excessive admiration, fragile self-esteem, and troubled relationships. People with NPD may behave in an arrogant way, brag a lot, come across as conceited, and insist on having the best of everything. They may also be envious of others and believe others envy them. Narcissists can be very magnetic and charming, and they are very good at creating a fantastical, flattering self-image that draws people in. Treatment for NPD centers around talk therapy, also called psychotherapy.
