Nasal polyps are soft, painless, noncancerous growths that form on the lining of the nose or sinuses. They are often shaped like teardrops and can occur in groups. Nasal polyps are linked to chronic rhinosinusitis, which is inflammation of the nasal passages and sinuses lasting 12 weeks or more. They can also be associated with asthma, allergies, repeat infections, or inflammation in the nasal passages. Nasal polyps can cause breathing problems, blockage of the nose, loss of smell, and infections. Symptoms of nasal polyps include a runny, stuffy, or blocked nose, sneezing, postnasal drip, facial pain, trouble with the sense of smell, loss of taste, itching around the eyes, and infections. Small nasal polyps might not cause symptoms, but larger growths or groups of nasal polyps can block the nose. Nasal polyps can be diagnosed by a doctor who will use a nasal endoscope, which is a small thin telescope with a camera on the end, to see inside the nose. Treatment for nasal polyps depends on the cause of the swelling and irritation. Medications such as nasal steroids can shrink nasal polyps and relieve symptoms. If medication doesnt shrink or get rid of nasal polyps, endoscopic surgery can remove polyps and correct problems with the sinuses that lead to polyps.
