In Islam, the term "nazar" or "evil eye" refers to misfortune that is transmitted from one person to another out of jealousy or envy. It starts when a person likes a thing, then his evil feelings affect it, by means of his repeated looking at the object of his jealousy. Islamic tradition holds that Muslims should rely on Allah alone to keep them safe from sorcery and malicious spirits rather than resorting to talismans or other means of protection. However, there are prayers and duas for protection from the evil eye, such as reciting al-Mu’awwadhatayn, Surat al-Ikhlas, Surat al-Fatihah, and ayat al-Kursi. Some Muslims view nazar as a cultural concern and do not place value or faith in it, while others believe it is a real phenomenon that can cause harm to the one whom it reaches. The concept of nazar is mentioned in the Quran and hadith, and many scholars of the Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah agree that it is a true phenomenon.
