The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is part of the United States National Library of Medicine, a branch of the National Institutes of Health. It was founded in 1988 through legislation sponsored by US Congressman Claude Pepper. The NCBI develops and maintains molecular and bibliographic databases as a part of the National Library of Medicine. It is an important resource for bioinformatics tools and services, and houses a series of databases relevant to biotechnology and biomedicine. Some of the major databases include:

  • GenBank: for DNA sequences
  • PubMed: a bibliographic database for biomedical literature
  • Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man: a database of human genes and genetic disorders
  • dbSNP: a database of single-nucleotide polymorphisms
  • Reference Sequence Collection: a collection of reference sequences for genes, transcripts, and proteins
  • Taxonomy Browser: a tool for exploring the classification of organisms

NCBI also provides APIs and code libraries to build applications, and tools for data analysis. Users can save searches, filters, and view preferences for all of the NCBI databases using myNCBI.
