NCD in insurance can refer to two different things: National Coverage Determinations (NCDs) in Medicare insurance, or No Claims Discount in auto insurance.

  • National Coverage Determinations (NCDs): NCDs are made through an evidence-based process, with opportunities for public participation. In some cases, CMS own research is supplemented by an outside technology assessment and/or consultation with the Medicare Evidence Development & Coverage Advisory Committee (MEDCAC) . NCDs are used to determine whether Medicare will cover a particular item or service.

  • No Claims Discount (NCD): NCD is a discount offered by insurers if you (the insured) have not made any claims under your policy for a year or more. The discount is essentially a reward scheme to encourage insured drivers to drive safely. The NCD rate is calculated based on the number of consecutive years you have not made a claim. The longer the period of time without a claim, the higher the discount.
