The New Democratic Party (NDP) is a political party in Canada that is widely described as social democratic and occupies the left to centre-left on the political spectrum. The NDP has made several promises, including:
-
Creating more than one million jobs: The NDP plans to create more than one million jobs to help boost the country’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and provide new access to training and education through its Workers and Development and Opportunities Fund, in collaboration with the provinces.
-
Reducing Canada’s emissions: The NDP plans to set a target of reducing Canada’s emissions by at least 50 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030. To accomplish this goal, the party will end subsidies for the oil and gas sector, modernize the national building code, and increase federal subsidies for zero-emission vehicles.
-
Building affordable homes: The NDP pledges to build 500,000 affordable homes in 10 years. To help homebuyers, the party wants to extend the maximum length of insured mortgages from 25 to 30 years, which would lower monthly payments for borrowers. They also promise to create a $5,000 annual subsidy for renters.
-
Improving healthcare: The NDP promises to fix the healthcare system and culture, improve working conditions and culture in facilities, and build new personal care homes to replace the existing ones crippled during the COVID-19 pandemic.
-
Supporting Indigenous communities: The NDP pledges to appoint a special prosecutor on residential schools and demand all residential school records from institutions such as governments and churches be released. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has also said an NDP government would also work to fully implement all outstanding recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
-
Improving immigration: The NDP plans to increase the number of immigrants staying in Manitoba through the Provincial Nominee Program, focusing on family reunification.
These are just a few examples of the promises made by the NDP. The party also supports a mixed economy, broader welfare, LGBT rights, international peace, environmental stewardship, and expanding Canadas universal healthcare system to include dental care, mental health care, eye and hearing care, infertility procedures, and prescription drugs.
