The National Education Policy of India 2020, also known as NEP 2020, is a policy document that outlines the vision of a new education system in India. It was approved by the Union Cabinet of India on July 29, 2020, and replaces the previous National Policy on Education, 1986. The policy is founded on the five guiding pillars of Access, Equity, Quality, Affordability, and Accountability.

NEP 2020 enacts numerous changes in Indias education policy, including increasing state expenditure on education from around 3% to 6% of the GDP as soon as possible. It also emphasizes the need for continuous professional development of teachers and the use of technology for teacher training and mentoring. The policy advocates for the use of mother tongue or local language as the medium of instruction till Class 5 while recommending its continuance till Class 8 and beyond.

NEP 2020 proposes various reforms in school education as well as higher education including technical education. It aims to increase the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) to 100% in preschool to secondary level by 2030 and GER in Higher Education including vocational education from 26.3% (2018) to 50% by 2035. The policy also focuses on tracking student progress based on learning levels to ensure that every student is able to achieve basic literacy and numeracy skills by grade 3.

In conclusion, NEP 2020 is a significant step towards transforming the Indian education system, making it more inclusive, equitable, and holistic.
