NESARA/GESARA is a conspiracy theory that suggests a radical reset of the worlds economic system, wiping out all debts and introducing new economic reforms. The theory is based on the National Economic Security and Recovery Act (NESARA), a set of proposed economic reforms for the United States suggested during the 1990s by private citizen Harvey Francis Barnard. The proposals included abolishing compound interest on loans, replacing income tax with a national sales tax, and returning U.S. currency to the gold standard. However, the proposals were never actually introduced before Congress, and conspiracy theorists like Shaini Goodwin (also known as the "Dove of Oneness") claim that they were secretly passed by Congress and then suppressed by George W. Bush.
Followers of the NESARA conspiracy theory began using the name "GESARA" in the mid-2010s, by referencing the set of reforms as a "Global" - and not "National" - Economic Security and Reformation Act. They notably claimed that several East Asian groups were involved in enforcing the reforms worldwide, including the purported "White Dragon Society" which would benefit from fundings by "the successors of the last Chinese Emperor, Pu Yi".
The GESARA/NESARA theory has been compared to a "grandfather" of QAnon and has been incorporated by other conspiracy theories. The theory has also been described as a cult and has been accused of being a scam. Despite being a baseless idea, the theory has gained popularity, and many of those who get sucked in develop an almost cult-like belief in NESARA that inspires them to make horrific financial decisions that they think will make them rich.
