Neutral detergent is a type of detergent that has a neutral pH balance and does not contain harsh chemicals or abrasives. It is used for cleaning sensitive materials such as surgical instruments, anesthetic utensils, personal protective equipment (PPE), and laundry. Neutral detergent is safe for use on all aluminum, zinc, and nonferrous metals. It contains a combination of surfactants, builders, and chelating agents for good wetting ability and detergent penetration. Neutral detergent is not for use as a medical device sterilant or high-level disinfectant. Using pH-neutral laundry detergent is important for the integrity of fabric because if a detergent is too acidic, it can degrade and destroy the fibers of clothing, bedding, and towels, particularly those made of delicate fabric. Most commercial modern detergents tend to be a bit on the alkaline side, with a pH of between 8 and 10, which is considered “good” for targeting routine dirt and stains, but the pH of these detergents is achieved by using harsh chemicals.
