NexGard is a medicine used to treat infestations with fleas and ticks, as well as demodectic and sarcoptic mange (skin infestations caused by two different types of mites) in dogs. It is available as chewable tablets in four different strengths for use in dogs of different weights. NexGard is given as a tablet of the appropriate strength for the dog’s body weight, and it kills fleas within 8 hours and ticks within 48 hours. After being given, its actions last for at least 5 weeks against fleas and up to one month against ticks.

NexGard is safe for use in puppies 8 weeks of age or older, weighing 4 pounds or more. The most frequently reported adverse reactions include vomiting, itching, lethargy, diarrhea, and lack of appetite. The safe use of NexGard in pregnant, breeding, or lactating dogs has not been evaluated. Use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders.

Some benefits of NexGard include:

  • The chew is soft and beef-flavored, so dogs like it.
  • It kills fleas fast - it starts to kill within 4 hours and has killed all fleas that land on the dog within 8 hours.
  • It kills ticks, including paralysis ticks.
  • It can be given with or without a meal.
  • NexGard can be safely given to all breeds of dogs.

It is important to consult a veterinarian before using any medications on dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders.
