NIBP stands for Non-Invasive Blood Pressure. It is a method of measuring blood pressure without the need for invasive procedures such as inserting a catheter into an artery. NIBP measurement uses a pressurized cuff around the arm or leg, and the auscultatory method measures BP by listening to the sounds of blood flow through the brachial artery. Automated measurements of NIBP can be taken via the application of an oscillometric technique that automatically inflates the cuff to a preset value. As the pressure is gradually reduced, an algorithm applied to elucidate the change in oscillations in the cuff vessel establishes the values for the systolic and diastolic pressures.

NIBP monitoring is widely used in operating rooms and critical care units to closely monitor blood pressure in patients of all ages. The accuracy of NIBP measurement is affected by factors such as the anatomical location of the cuff, cuff size, and patient movement. The American Heart Association recommends using an inflatable bladder with a length that is 80% of the patients arm circumference and a width that is at least 40% of the same.

NIBP recording and analysis machines allow for the capture of continuous blood pressure data over long sampling periods easily, and with increased comfort for the subject. The ability to collect multiple parameters in parallel coupled with powerful software analysis makes NIBP recording and analysis a valuable tool for cardiovascular research.
