Non-binary is a term used to describe gender identities that are not exclusively male or female, and therefore fall outside the gender binary. Non-binary people may identify as an intermediate or separate third gender, identify with more than one gender, no gender, or have a fluctuating gender identity. Being non-binary is not the same as being intersex, as most intersex people identify as either male or female. Non-binary people are usually not intersex, and they are usually born with bodies that may fit typical definitions of male and female, but their innate gender identity is something other than male or female. Non-binary people use many different terms to describe themselves, including genderqueer, agender, bigender, genderfluid, and more. Pronouns are short words used to describe someone instead of using their name, and non-binary people may choose gender-neutral pronouns such as they/them. Non-binary people as a group vary in their gender expressions, and some may reject gender identity altogether. Non-binary people face discrimination, including disregard, disbelief, condescending interactions, and disrespect.
