In India, passports are categorized as ECR (Emigration Check Required) or Non-ECR (Emigration Check Not Required) based on the individuals age, educational qualification, and other factors. Non-ECR category in Indian passport denotes that the passport holder does not require Emigration Clearance while traveling to a particular country. The following individuals are eligible to get a Non-ECR passport:
- All holders of Diplomatic/official Passports
- All GAZETTED Government servants, their spouses, and dependent children
- Seamen who are in possession of Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC), or Sea Cadets and Deck Cadets
- Persons holding Permanent Immigration Visa, such as the visas of UK, USA, and Australia
To apply for a Non-ECR passport, the applicant must submit a written statement detailing all the dates of exit and entry into India and produce the passport for verification. The documents required for a Non-ECR passport vary based on the individuals status, such as age, educational background, and occupation. The practice of putting a Non-ECR stamp on the passport has been discontinued.
