Obsessive Love Disorder (OLD) is a psychological condition where a person becomes obsessed with one person they think they may be in love with. It is not a formally recognized mental illness, but it is a relationship style characterized by unhealthy obsessions for a particular person. Symptoms of OLD include fixating on one person, low self-esteem, extreme jealousy, and delusional jealousy. People with OLD may also experience anxious and depressive episodes. The specific causes of OLD are difficult to pinpoint, but many psychologists agree that certain risk factors increase a persons chance of having it. These risk factors include insecure attachment styles, delusional disorders, and mental health issues such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) . Since OLD intersects with other forms of mental health disabilities, a medical diagnosis from a primary doctor may also be needed to rule out other causes. Treatment for OLD may include therapy, medication, or a combination of both.
