Off-road diesel is a type of diesel fuel that is intended for use by farms, industrial, and construction vehicles that do not travel on public roadways. It is dyed red to denote that it is untaxed and is for use in off-road purposes only. Off-road diesel is chemically identical to on-road diesel, which is also known as clear diesel and can be purchased at the local gas station. The only differences between the two fuels are in the color, cost, and intended use. In the past, off-road diesel had a higher sulfur content, which caused a smokier burn, but since 2014, regulations for emissions standards, sulfur content, and fuel quality have been leveled across the board for both on-road and off-road diesel. It is important to note that it is not legal to put off-road diesel in a vehicle that drives on roads, and doing so can result in significant fines.
