In hockey, offside and icing are two common rule violations that result in a stoppage of play but do not require that an infringing player be sent to the penalty box. Heres what each term means:

  • Offside: This occurs when an offensive player enters the opposing teams zone before the puck does. If a player crosses the blue line ahead of the puck, they are offside and the play is whistled dead. Two linesmen, one at each blue line, determine whether an offside infraction was committed.

  • Icing: This occurs when a player on their teams side of the red center line shoots the puck all the way down the ice and it crosses the red goal line at any point (other than the goal). Icing is not permitted when teams are at equal strength or on the power play. When this occurs, play is stopped and the puck is returned to the other end of the ice for a face-off in the offending teams zone. Icing is not called if the goalie leaves the crease to play the puck, even if they do not touch the puck. An official may waive off the icing call if they deem it was an attempted pass.

Its important to note that while these are the basic definitions of offside and icing, there are additional rules and nuances that apply to each.
