Offsides in hockey is when a player on the attacking team precedes the puck over the defending teams blue line. The position of the players skates is the determining factor of whether a player is offsides or not, meaning the position of the players stick has no bearing on the play. If a player attacking the offensive zone keeps one of their skates on, or behind, the blue line, the play continues. If a player is found to be in violation of the offside rule, a linesman will stop play and there will be a faceoff at the nearest ice spot. When a delayed offside is called, players must tag up at the blue line before re-entering the offensive zone. Deflections, while a rare occurrence, can still be deemed offsides by the referee.
