Utah offers several license plates, including four standard issue plates and over 60 optional plates. The standard issue plates include "In God We Trust," "Life Elevated Skier," "Life Elevated Arches," and "Off-Highway Vehicle". One of the standard issue plates, the black and white plate, is no longer issued by the State of Utah but is still valid and in use on many operating vehicles.
The black and white plate is a specialty plate that was previously only available for vintage vehicles but is now available for cars, trucks, and motorcycles. It is the most popular plate in Utah, with a waitlist of 6 to 8 weeks to get one. The plate costs about $50 more than a standard plate and benefits the Utah State Historical Society.
In addition to the standard issue plates and the black and white plate, Utah offers over 60 optional plates that raise money for various causes and can be used to honor or recognize certain groups of people. Examples of optional plates include the Historic Black & White plate, which benefits the Historical Society of Utah, and the Special Great Salt Lake plate, which helps preserve the Great Salt Lake.
