The Option key on a Mac is a modifier key that is usually labeled with the letters Alt and the ⌥ symbol. It is located between the Control key and the Command key on the left of the bottom row of the keyboard, and newer Macs with bigger keyboards may also have an Option/Alt key on the right side of the keyboard. The Option key has many essential uses on the Mac, such as typing symbols and accent marks, navigating in a text program, and providing alternative menu items and buttons when pressed down. The key is also used to provide for alternative functions when used in conjunction with special keys like Tab, delete, and return. The Option key is similar to the AltGr key on European keyboards of IBM-compatible PCs, in the sense that it can be used to type additional characters, symbols, and diacritical marks.
