OPT stands for Optional Practical Training, which is a benefit available to international students in F-1 immigration status who are enrolled in, or completing, a degree program in the United States. OPT is temporary employment that is directly related to an F-1 student’s major area of study. Eligible students can apply to receive up to 12 months of OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies (pre-completion) and/or after completing their academic studies (post-completion). OPT allows graduates to gain valuable hands-on experience and begin contributing their education and training to the U.S. immediately.

In general, the word "opt" means to make a choice or decision, or to show preference for something. For example, "After perusing the menu, he opted for the prime rib". It can also be used in the phrase "opt out," which means to decide to withdraw from or not take part in something.
