Order 66 is a command instituted by Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars franchise that labeled all members of the Jedi Order as traitors to the Empire and marked them for death. It is a top-secret contingency order that was built into an inhibitor chip in the clones brains, so following the instruction was compulsory. The order was handed down in the climax of Revenge of the Sith, and it led to the purge of the Jedi, leaving only a handful of practicing members of the order alive. The sudden turn was a massive surprise to most Jedi, and many were gunned down before they realized they were in danger. While clone troopers executed most of the working Jedi Knights, some non-Jedi victims were caught in the crossfire. Former Jedi Ahsoka Tano and former Sith Darth Maul were both marked for death under the order. Order 66 carried multiple codicils, but most of them are unknown. The destruction caused by Order 66 allowed the Empire to rise and take over, and with the Jedis numbers depleted, and the limited survivors on the run, the Empire was able to emerge uncontested.
