An OTG (On-The-Go) cable is a cable that allows USB devices, such as smartphones or tablets, to act as a host, allowing other USB devices, such as USB flash drives, digital cameras, mouse or keyboards, to be attached to them. An OTG cable has a micro-A plug on one end and a micro-B plug on the other end, and it adds a fifth pin to the standard USB connector, called the ID-pin. When an OTG-enabled device is connected to a PC, it uses its own USB-A or USB Type-C cable, and when an OTG-enabled device is attached to a USB device, such as a flash drive, the device must either end in the appropriate connection for the device, or the user must supply an appropriate adapter.

OTG cables are useful for transferring data as well as connectivity to peripherals. They allow the connection of input devices, data storage, and A/V devices. Some common uses of OTG cables include:

  • Connecting a full-sized USB flash drive or USB A cable to a phone or tablet through the Micro USB or USB-C charging port.
  • Connecting a USB mic to a smartphone or tablet to record audio for a podcast on-the-go.
  • Connecting a flash drive or SD card to a mobile device to transfer photos, videos, and documents directly between the device and the USB drive or SD card without needing a computer as an intermediary.
  • Connecting a keyboard or mouse to a tablet or smartphone to write a report or use both devices simultaneously.

Nearly all smartphones and tablets that are currently available support USB On-The-Go.
