Otomize Ear Spray is a medication used to treat mild to moderate outer ear infections and inflammation, also known as "swimmers ear" or "otitis externa". It is an antibacterial, steroidal treatment that contains three active ingredients: neomycin sulfate, dexamethasone, and acetic acid. Neomycin sulfate is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that fights infection by stopping bacteria from producing proteins needed to reproduce. Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that works by preventing the immune system from producing the chemicals that cause inflammation. Acetic acid produces a low pH to assist in the control of bacterial infection.
Otomize Ear Spray is applied topically to the external auditory meatus and acts locally. The spray provides excellent distribution and coverage of the surface. It is a milky oil-in-water emulsion as a liquid ear spray for application into the external auditory meatus. Otomize Ear Spray is for use on the external ear only, and one metered dose (60mg) should be administered directly into each affected ear three times daily. Treatment should be continued until two days after symptoms have disappeared. Otomize Ear Spray is not suitable for infants and neonates.
Before using Otomize Ear Spray, it is important to shake the bottle well and press the actuator down several times to obtain a fine spray. Otomize Ear Spray should not be inhaled, and olive oil or any other ear drops or sprays should not be used during treatment with Otomize, unless told to by a doctor. If symptoms do not improve within seven days, another appointment with a doctor should be made.
Otomize Ear Spray is available on prescription only and can be prescribed for adults and children over two years of age. It is important to inform a doctor of any underlying medical or hearing conditions and any allergic reactions experienced.
