Parvati is the Hindu goddess of fertility, love, and devotion, and also determination. She is a manifestation of Shakti, the divine feminine energy of the universe, and the wife of Shiva, the supreme being. Parvati is the mother of Skanda, the god of war, and Ganesh, the remover of obstacles. She is usually depicted alongside Shiva with two arms, holding one lotus, or represented alone with four arms, holding two lotuses. Parvati is worshiped for help with marriage, parenting, and fertility.

According to the Devi Bhagavata Purana and Shaktism and Shaivism traditions, Parvati is the lineal progenitor of all other goddesses and is worshiped as one with many forms and names. Her form or incarnation depends on her mood, and she is associated with other mountain goddesses like Durga and Kali in later traditions. Parvati is closely related in symbolism and powers to Cybele of Greek and Roman mythology and as Vesta the guardian goddess of children. In her manifestation as Durga, Parvati parallels Mater Montana, and as Kali and punisher of all evil, she corresponds to Proserpine and Diana Taurica.

Parvati is one of the most complex goddesses in the Hindu pantheon, and in each of her roles, she has a different name to represent her mild and fierce forms. She is the provider of shakti, and without her, life is completely inert. The goddess is worshiped by all gods, the Trimurti, rishis, and all other beings.
