PCOS belly is a term used to describe the characteristic pattern of central fat accumulation around the abdomen in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) . It is a sign of increased fat deposition around the waist, making the waist circumference measurement higher than it should be. PCOS belly is physiologically different from other types of weight gain, and it is usually large and bloated but can also be small and round, depending on genes and other factors. It involves visceral fat accumulation in the lower abdomen and typically feels hard to touch. A PCOS belly is also characterized by a high waist-to-hip ratio of >0.87 (apple body shape) . The cause of PCOS belly is multifactorial and related to excess male hormones and other metabolic imbalances. Hormonal fluctuations and insulin resistance are the main causes of PCOS belly. Abdominal fat is considered to be the most dangerous because it surrounds internal organs and puts you at a greater risk of developing serious health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and liver problems. However, the good news is that this fat is easier to lose than other types of fat.
