A pelvic scan, also known as a pelvic ultrasound, is a noninvasive diagnostic exam that produces images used to assess organs and structures within the female pelvis. The test uses sound waves to create pictures of the organs inside the pelvis, including the uterus, cervix, vagina, fallopian tubes, ovaries, bladder, prostate gland, and seminal vesicles. The procedure is performed by a trained medical technician who applies a small amount of warm gel on the skin over the pelvic area and moves a handheld device called a transducer through the gel and across the pelvis. The transducer sends out sound waves that bounce off the organs and tissues in the pelvis, and the resulting echoes are recorded and converted into images that appear on a nearby screen. Pelvic scans are used to diagnose a range of conditions, including pain, bleeding, tumors, cysts, infections, and problems with the bladder, prostate gland, and seminal vesicles. The test is safe, noninvasive, and does not use ionizing radiation.
