Perio breath is a condition where problems with the gums contribute to bad odors in the mouth, also known as halitosis. It is caused by bacteria in the mouth breaking down proteins and releasing volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), which have a bad smell. In patients with gum disease, the inflamed tissues can serve as a source for the production of VSCs in the mouth, which can increase the severity of perio breath. The relationship between bad breath and gum disease goes both ways, as halitosis can also affect a persons risk of developing periodontal disease. Some signs of perio breath and gum disease include bleeding gums, swollen or tender gums, sensitive teeth, receding gums, unusual pain while chewing, and of course, bad breath. Treatment for perio breath and gum disease includes seeking medical attention, practicing good oral hygiene, and seeking evaluation from a dentist.
