Personal injury protection (PIP) is a type of insurance coverage that covers medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages regardless of who is at fault in an accident. PIP is also known as "no-fault insurance" because it covers medical bills and related costs resulting from an accident, no matter who caused it. PIP is available in some U.S. states and is required in some states. PIP coverage can help pay for medical bills, hospital bills, and costs not covered by health insurance. PIP coverage can also include lost wages, rehabilitation costs, funeral costs, and service replacement of someone injured in a covered car accident. Personal injury protection is not the same as liability insurance, which covers medical costs for the third-party, not the policyholder, if it is determined that the policyholder is at-fault. Personal injury protection could also refer to personal injury insurance or coverage, which is insurance in any context that includes coverage for personal injury, particularly coverage for emotional distress, libel, or defamation as opposed to coverage for only bodily injury. Home insurance typically includes coverage for liability arising from bodily injury, especially on an insureds premises, but not from liability arising from mental injury. Coverage from mental injury can be included and is typically called "personal injury" coverage.
