Personally identifiable information (PII) is any information related to an identifiable person. PII can contain direct identifiers, such as passport information, that can identify a person uniquely, or quasi-identifiers, such as race, that can be combined with other quasi-identifiers, such as date of birth, to successfully recognize an individual. Examples of PII include name, social security number, biometric records, date and place of birth, mothers maiden name, medical, educational, financial, and employment information. The U.S. governments Office of Management and Budget (OMB) defines PII as "information which can be used to distinguish or trace an individuals identity, such as their name, social security number, biometric records, etc. alone, or when combined with other personal or identifying information which is linked or linkable to a specific individual". The European Unions General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires organizations to protect all personal data, defined as "any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person".
