PHR stands for Professional in Human Resources, which is a certification in the human resource management profession. The certification is awarded by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) and signifies that individuals have demonstrated technical and operational knowledge of HR management, including U.S. laws and regulations. The PHR certification emphasizes a practitioners operational responsibilities for the organizations HR department. To be eligible for the PHR, individuals must meet one of the following conditions for education and/or experience: have at least one year of experience in a professional-level HR position and a Master’s degree or higher, have at least two years of experience in a professional-level HR position and a Bachelor’s degree, or have at least four years of experience in a professional-level HR position.

Recertification for the PHR can be done by re-taking the exam every three years, or by earning 60 recertification credits inside of their 3-year cycle. The HRCI will accept these credits from a variety of different resources, including work experience, conference/seminar attendance, and eLearning (webinar-based).
