Pitta dosha is one of the three doshas in Ayurveda, which are the elemental energies that influence everything from physical shape and digestion to the way we process thoughts and emotions. Pitta dosha is associated with the elements of fire and water, and it governs digestion, transformation, and metabolism in the body. Some of the characteristics of pitta dosha include being hot, sharp, oily, liquid, and mobile. People with pitta dosha are said to usually have a muscular build, be very athletic, and serve as strong leaders. They’re highly motivated, goal-oriented, and competitive.
According to Ayurveda, the five natural elements (ether, air, fire, water, and earth) are present in our mind and body in the form of the doshas: Vata (ether, air), Pitta (fire, water), and Kapha (water, earth). Everyone has all three doshas present in their mind and body, but most of us tend to have one or two doshas predominating.
Pitta dosha can become imbalanced due to factors such as stress, overwork, and a diet that is too spicy or acidic. When pitta is out of balance, it can lead to symptoms such as irritability, inflammation, and skin rashes. To balance pitta dosha, Ayurveda recommends engaging in cooling activities and consuming foods that are sweet, bitter, and astringent in taste. Some herbs and formulations that are especially useful for balancing pitta include amalaki, Healthy Pitta, and Pitta Digest. Additionally, practicing yoga and meditation can help balance pitta dosha.
