In Tagalog, the word for "poem" is "tula". Tula is a type of Filipino poem that uses four lines, each line having seven syllables only. It usually contains many figures of speech and exemplifies teachings, idioms, feelings, and ways of life. Filipino poetry has themes that are religious, heroic, lyric, and didactic. Muslim-Filipino literature is predominantly composed of Maranao narrative poetry, known as darangan, which consists of 25 epic tales revolving around one great hero named Bantugan.
