A power play in ice hockey is a situation where one team has more players on the ice than the other team due to a penalty being called on the opposing team. The team on the power play has an advantage in numbers, usually having a one- or two-person advantage over their opponent. During a power play, the penalized player or players are sent to the penalty box, and the team that incurred the penalty is not allowed to call in a substitute.
