A Power Red donation is a type of blood donation where a concentrated dose of red blood cells is collected using an automated process that separates the red blood cells from other blood components, and then safely and comfortably returns the plasma and platelets back to the donor. During a Power Red donation, two units of red blood cells are collected, which is nearly double the amount collected during a regular blood donation. This type of donation is ideal for individuals who are extremely busy, committed to donating blood, and have type O, A negative, or B negative blood. Power Red donation takes approximately 30 minutes longer than a whole blood donation, and donors can donate approximately every four months. The red cells collected during a Power Red donation are typically given to trauma patients, newborns, people with sickle cell anemia, and anyone suffering blood loss. Power Red donation is safe and offers perks for the donor, such as feeling more hydrated after the donation and using a smaller needle than a whole blood donation. To be eligible for Power Red donation, donors must meet specific criteria for hemoglobin, weight, and height, in addition to meeting other whole blood donor qualifications.
