Prabhat Pheri is a tradition that involves a group of people taking early morning rounds around the society while reciting shabads. It is a ritual that has been prevalent in ethnic India for centuries and is associated with the cultural aspect of celebration of festivities in Punjab. The term "Prabhat Pheri" literally means "early morning rounds". During the early morning rounds, people from the villages would get up early in the morning much before the sun’s rays peeped from the sky, and take rounds of the village chanting and reciting shabads and playing ethnic instruments. The tradition is associated with Sikhism and is often performed during Guru Nanak Devji’s Gurpurab. The purpose of Prabhat Pheri is to purify the men and women of the village and to defeat greed to sleep and become more disciplined and spiritual.
