Premium Tatkal is a ticket booking quota introduced by the Indian Railways in 2014. It is similar to the Tatkal scheme, but with dynamic fare pricing. This means that passengers will be charged a higher price in case of increased demand and a lower price if the demand is less. Premium Tatkal tickets can be purchased only through the IRCTC website, whereas Tatkal tickets can be procured through online sources like Paytm and also at the railway ticket counters. The booking timings for Premium Tatkal are the same as for Tatkal, and it is opened by 10.00 AM for AC classes and 11.00 AM for non-AC classes. The dynamic fare stands for the increased fare charged only for the confirmed passengers, and it is twice that of the usual Tatkal ticket charges. The difference between Tatkal and Premium Tatkal tickets are as follows:
- Tatkal ticket charges are fixed, whereas Premium Tatkal tickets have dynamic fare pricing for various classes.
- For Tatkal tickets, agents are allowed to book tickets under this quota, whereas for Premium Tatkal, this is prohibited.
- RAC/ WL ticket can be booked as Tatkal tickets, whereas only confirmed tickets get booked under Premium Tatkal.
- Passengers might get a waitlisted ticket under Tatkal booking, but this is not possible for Premium Tatkal.
- Tatkal tickets can be canceled, but this option is not available for Premium Tatkal.
- Preferential allowances are given to senior citizens and children under Tatkal tickets, but not under Premium Tatkal.
Passengers can contact the IRCTC Customer Care for Premium Tatkal booking queries.
