The Presidential Alert is a type of Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) that is sent to mobile devices in the United States during national emergencies, such as terrorist attacks or widespread natural disasters. The alerts are issued at the direction of the President or an appointee and are activated by FEMA representatives. The Presidential Alert is a special class of alert that is only sent during a national emergency. The alert is designed to let the White House inform the entire country almost instantly of grave public emergencies, such as a terrorist attack or an invasion. The Presidential Alert is part of the WEA system, which is used to warn the public of an impending natural or human-made disaster. The WEA system has been used more than 84,000 times to warn the public about dangerous weather, missing children, and other critical situations. The Presidential Alert is a text-based notification that appears on mobile devices and reads "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed". The message will display in either English or Spanish, depending on the phones set language. The Presidential Alert cannot be blocked, unlike other types of alerts such as imminent safety and AMBER alerts.
