PropTech, or property technology, refers to the use of digital technology in the real estate industry. It encompasses all the tech tools that real estate professionals use to optimize the way people buy, sell, research, market, and manage a property. PropTech solutions often use advanced methods, like machine learning and automation, to provide these services. The term "PropTech" is a portmanteau of "property" and "technology".

PropTech can be divided into two main categories: residential and commercial. Residential PropTech includes digital products developed by real estate tech companies to facilitate the way people own, manage, or rent apartments and houses, such as short-term rental platforms like Airbnb or Lyric. Commercial Real Estate (CRE) PropTech, on the other hand, refers to the use of all the innovative tools companies and individual commercial real estate professionals use to efficiently run, search, rent, and sell office buildings as well as industrial and retail property assets.

PropTech has been taking shape over several decades, with real estate institutions searching for more efficient ways to handle investment and portfolio management since the 1980s. The early 2000s saw the emergence of real estate tech companies such as Zillow, Redfin, and Trulia, which established themselves as PropTech frontrunners. PropTech solutions simplify daily operations and empower holistic decision-making for various professionals in the real estate industry, including building operators, investment managers, brokers, and legal teams.
