Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy for hair loss is a three-step medical treatment in which a persons blood is drawn, processed, and then injected into the scalp. PRP treatments can enhance hair restoration and other cosmetic plastic surgery procedures. PRP injections can be effective in treating male pattern baldness, both in preventing hair loss and promoting new hair growth. PRP can also aid in the stimulation of hair growth after hair transplants. PRP can be used as a new therapeutic option for hair loss including androgenetic alopecia and female pattern hair loss, either as a monotherapy or in combination with other treatments. The mechanism behind PRP injections is not completely understood, but studies show that the increased concentration of growth factors in platelet-rich plasma may stimulate or speed up the healing process, shortening healing time for injuries, decreasing pain, and even encouraging hair growth.
