Psychology is a subject that studies human behavior, experience, and mental processes in different contexts. It is a social science that emphasizes an individuals uniqueness and variation that make them different from others. Psychology as a discipline can be traced back to ancient philosophy, but it emerged as a science of mental processes, behavior, and experiences due to certain important developments in physiology and physics, as well as the efforts of William Wilhelm Wundt, who established the first psychological laboratory in 1879.

The evolution of psychology can be traced through the major schools of psychological thought, including structuralism, gestalt psychology, behaviorism, and psychoanalysis. Psychology is a hybrid science that draws its influence from both natural and social sciences. It has several branches, including cognitive psychology, biological psychology, neuropsychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, clinical psychology, health psychology, educational psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, and forensic psychology.

Psychology is closely related to other disciplines such as philosophy, neurology, physiology, biology, medicine, computer science, law, criminology, mass communication, music, fine arts, architecture, and engineering.
