Rabeprazole is a medication used to treat several gastrointestinal conditions, including:
-
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): a condition in which backward flow of acid from the stomach causes heartburn and possible injury of the esophagus (the tube that connects the throat and stomach) in adults and children 12 years of age and older.
-
Ulcers: sores in the lining of the stomach or intestine. Rabeprazole is used in combination with other medications to eliminate H. pylori (a bacteria that causes ulcers) in adults.
-
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: a condition where the stomach produces too much acid. Rabeprazole is used to treat this condition in adults.
Rabeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that decreases the amount of acid produced by the stomach. It is available only with a doctors prescription and comes in the form of delayed-release tablets or capsules. The medication is usually taken once a day, and the duration of treatment is typically 4 to 8 weeks.
It is important to note that the use of rabeprazole for treating GERD is not recommended in children younger than 1 year of age for Aciphex Sprinkle capsule or in children younger than 12 years of age for Aciphex delayed-release tablets. Additionally, safety and efficacy have not been established for treating ulcers associated with infections, duodenal ulcers, or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome in the pediatric population.
