Ram Setu, also known as Adams Bridge, is a chain of natural limestone shoals that connects Pamban Island off the southeastern coast of Tamil Nadu, India, to Mannar Island off the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka. It is also known as Rama Setu, Ramasethu, and Setu Banda. According to Hindu mythology, it was built by Lord Rama with the help of his army of vanaras (monkeys) to reach Sri Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from Raavana. The bridge is said to have been constructed using floating stones, and Lord Ramas name was engraved on all the stones to make the bridge unsinkable. The debate about whether the Palk Strait is natural or a man-made bridge has been going on for years. While some believe that it is a man-made structure, others argue that it is a natural formation. A study conducted by Madras University and Anna University found that the Ram Setu was formed as many as 18,400 years ago. The Indian government has launched scientific expeditions to ascertain whether the Ram Setu is a man-made structure or not and whether its dates corroborate with that of the Ramayana.
