RCS stands for Rich Communication Services, which is a messaging protocol that provides an upgraded, rich messaging experience. It is a modern industry standard for messaging that allows for a more dynamic and secure conversation than SMS or MMS. Some of the features of RCS messaging include:

  • Read receipts: This feature shows when someone has read your message.

  • Typing indicators: This feature shows when someone is typing a message.

  • High-quality media: You can share files and high-resolution photos.

  • Live chats: Live chats that include multimedia can take place between businesses and the users native inbox.

When you use RCS chats, your messages are sent with the Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol over Wi-Fi and mobile data. RCS chats are provided by Google or your mobile carrier. If your carrier and device arent automatically set up for RCS chats, you may be offered RCS chats. If your carrier supports RCS but your device isnt automatically set up for RCS chats, you may get a notification to "Do more with Messages". RCS messages youve sent are darker blue than SMS or MMS messages. If someone doesnt have strong enough service or connection to WiFi when you send them an RCS message, the messages will then be delivered through a fallback protocol or another app, including SMS, MMS, or WhatsApp.
