Red Dye No. 3, also known as erythrosine or FD&C Red No. 3, is a synthetic dye made from petroleum that gives foods and drinks a bright, cherry-red color. It is primarily used for food coloring and is found in many products, including candies, cakes, snack foods, and even some medications and supplements. The FDA banned the use of Red Dye No. 3 in cosmetics and externally applied drugs in 1990 based on a study that it can cause cancer in rats. However, it is still allowed in food products in the US, although it is severely restricted in the European Union and other countries. Multiple studies have linked consumption of synthetic dyes, including Red Dye No. 3, to behavioral issues in children, including hyperactivity. In October 2023, California banned the manufacture, sale, and distribution of Red Dye No. 3 (along with three other additives) in food products starting in 2027.
