Regular 88 fuel, also known as Unleaded 88 or E15, is a gasoline blend that contains 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline. The name "88" comes from its octane rating, which is typically 88, while regular unleaded gasoline has an octane rating of 87. Regular 88 is generally less expensive than regular unleaded gasoline, and it is promoted as an affordable option in times of soaring gas prices. According to experts, regular 88 gets slightly lower gas mileage than regular unleaded and gives off fewer carbon emissions, but the differences are minor. Regular 88 has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in all 2001 and newer cars, trucks, and SUVs. However, it should not be used in motorcycles, heavy-duty trucks, or non-traditional vehicles like snowmobiles or lawn mowers. Experts recommend consulting the vehicle owners manual or engine/equipment manufacturers fuel recommendations prior to using regular 88 to ensure the vehicle was designed for E15 gasoline.
