Relationship management is a key component of emotional intelligence, which refers to our ability to monitor our own and others feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide our thinking and actions. Relationship management is the ability to build value-adding relationships with others, communicate clearly, maintain good relationships, connect with those from other cultures, work well in teams, and manage conflict. It is the top layer of EQ, being the culmination of proper development of the previous three pillars: self-awareness, self-management, and social awareness.

Individuals with strengths in relationship management are non-defensive, clear and respectful in describing their concerns and perspectives to others, open to negative feedback from others, skilled in giving constructive feedback to others, balanced in their view of others strengths and weaknesses, effective at approaching, managing and resolving conflict, calm and confident in difficult or emotionally charged situations, proactive in addressing interpersonal difficulties, skilled at managing team or group dynamics, motivational and inspirational leaders, and skilled at creating a positive and hopeful mood even during stressful or otherwise challenging situations.

Improving relationship management involves improving listening and speaking skills, emotionally intelligent emailing, expressing respect and appreciation, and watching your emotions and how you manage them. It is important to understand that relationship management is not just about building friendships, but rather about building value-adding relationships with everyone, even those we dont get along with. By improving our relationship management skills, we can improve the quality of our relationships and ultimately benefit our personal and professional lives.
